April Showers Bring May Workshops!

I'm excited to open up registration for a new batch of sewing workshops in my beautiful studio at the Lincoln Street Center in Rockland, Maine!

Read on for the schedule, descriptions, and supply list for each workshop.

PROJECT BEGINNER: Make a Lavender Eye Pillow Katherine Ferrier | Thursday, May 11, 6-8pm $60 includes all materials Register here!

Do you have a sewing machine still in the box, waiting for you to get up the courage to figure out how to use it? Do you dream of making beautiful things that you just can’t find in a store? Are you looking for a sweet gift for someone you love? Welcome to PROJECT BEGINNER, a new series of workshops designed for folks who want to make friends with their sewing machines, hone their basic sewing skills, and get busy making all the beautiful things they’ve been dreaming about. In this 2 hour workshop, you’ll make a lavender and rice filled eye pillow, using your choice of beautiful linen remnants. Along the way you’ll learn how to thread your sewing machine, choose the right thread color, sew a straight stitch, and make neat turned corners. We’ll embellish our eye pillows with some hand stitching as well. By the end of this workshop, you’ll be more comfortable with your sewing machine, and have a lovely gift (just in time for Mother’s Day!) Don’t have your own sewing machine, but still want to learn? I have several machines available for you to use during class.

EMBRACING MYSTERY: QUILT MAKING + CYANOTYPE PRINTS Katherine Ferrier | Saturday, May 13, 10am-6pm $185 (includes snacks, drinks, and all materials)

Register Here! In this workshop we’ll work with themes of light and dark, shadows and ghosts, and collaborations with the unknown, as we learn how to make prints on fabric using the power of the sun and the magic of cyanotypes. We’ll take inspiration from the land, collecting shapes that call to us in the form of leaves, sticks, flowers, or feathers. We'll delight in the beauty of everyday and ordinary, as we contemplate the shapes of familiar objects and keepsakes from around our home. Once we make our prints, we’ll use that fabric to make a small quilt/wall hanging, adding stitches as another layer of meaning. Along the way we’ll explore elements of composition, design, and embracing mistakes, all while learning the basics of quilt making. Kits will be provided and include treated fabric to make prints, quilt batting, and backing fabric. Please bring:

scissors

a sewing machine in good working order

thread for your sewing machine

objects from around your home you'd like to make prints of

a bag lunch

FRICTION & TRANSFORMATION: MAKING A FELTED BOWL Katherine Ferrier | Saturday, May 20, 10am-5pm $185 (includes snacks, drinks, and all materials) Register Here! In this class you’ll learn the basics of wet felting and make a simple, seamless small bowl or vessel by transforming wispy wool roving into a durable structure using water, soap, and a bit of agitation. Along the way, we’ll marvel at the many metaphors of how things come into being, how friction helps new forms emerge, and how patience is a practice where transformation is concerned. No previous experience with felting necessary, though be prepared to break a sweat to bring your bowl into being. Please bring 2 large, old towels, an apron and/or wear clothes you don’t mind getting a bit wet. Plan to bring a bag lunch, or walk the few blocks to one of Rockland's tasty cafes.

MAKING, BEING, AND BEING MADE: WRITING FOR MAKERS Tuesday, May 23, 6-8pm Tuesday, May 30, 6-8pm

NOTE: I'm offering this workshop twice in May. Sign up for each separately.

If making is a practice of paying attention, what can we learn about ourselves, and the world, by tuning in to the layers of meaning and metaphor embedded in every thread of our lives as makers? How is making its own kind of making sense? How does what we make in turn make us? This workshop is one part making, one part meditation, and one part contemplative/ creative writing. We’ll begin with some quiet, meditative handwork, (sewing, stitching, spinning knitting, drawing, etc) each tending to our own work. From this place of deep listening and connection, we’ll work with a variety of writing prompts that will act as invitations into memory, metaphor, and meaning. There will be space for sharing our writing with each other so that we might deepen our appreciation of how our personal stories are interwoven with and connected to the world around us. No formal writing experience is required. Please bring some handwork and a journal. It’s best to bring something you can work on without concentrating too much, so that your hands can be steadily working, leaving your thoughts to drift into the rich realms of memory and meaning. Simple stitching/embroidery materials can be provided for those in between or without projects for a materials fee of $5. You don't need to think of yourself as a writer, or an accomplished maker to get a lot from this workshop. A writer is someone who writes. A maker is someone who makes. You'll be gently guided into doing both in this mellow, slow-it-down, meet yourself where you are workshop.
