Embodied Democracy

Compositional Improvisation offers us profound tools for creating community. Cultivating an ongoing practice of paying attention, we hone the skills needed to co-inhabit the performative, daily, literal and figurative spaces we create together. This workshop begins with solo investigations grounded in turning one’s attention to the inner sensory and imaginal landscape and grows into deep research of whole-group awareness and composing. Movement exercises act as open doorways into fresh perceptions and unusual movement choices. Solo research supports our ability to make conscious choices in relationship to other, the environment and sound, and provides the foundation for the poetic refinement of one’s own compositional point-of-view. Together we create and embody a true, vibrant and living democracy as we commit to meeting the moment both consciously and collaboratively.

KINETIC | POETIC | SOMATIC: Research for Writers & Movers

In this workshop, we expand our somatic vocabulary and our hone our ability to tend to what hovers just beyond the reach of our attention. Through gentle, guided movement research, we cultivate new kinds of logic and syntax, and experiment with applying what we find to our writing practice. We simultaneously use words to generate possibilities for moving, and invite our physical research to open unexplored pathways of possibility into language. Radical permission to move differently delivers each writer/mover to the razor’s edge of familiar vs. unknown territory. We begin with the beginning: how do you investigate the vague sense; how do you pull on the first thread to unravel more raw material?  How can you deepen poetic contact with your emerging material? How can you complexify, seek out other angles, lure yourself into new modes of working and organizing? Finally, how can you learn to trust your embodied experience of a thing?  No formal dance training is necessary, just a willingness to court the unfamiliar, set oneself on edge, and open wide the somatic windows of attention.

Sudden Shifts – Movement Training for the Resistance

Compositional Improvisation makes a potent space for experiencing ourselves as powerful agents of change. This work prepares us to be able to act powerfully and suddenly as a group, creating spontaneous yet cohesive actions and forms. By cultivating an ongoing practice of paying attention, we hone the skills needed to co-inhabit the performative, daily, literal and figurative spaces we create together, and transform them into situations in which all voices are recognized, and in which powerful sudden actions can arise. No previous dance training is necessary, just a willingness to move into the unknown with courage, curiosity, and compassion.
